In this workshop, we’re stepping things up and taking a familiar hand-building technique — coiling — and using it in a completely different way.

Most of us have used coiling to build upwards, creating simple pots or vases. In this workshop, we’re turning that idea on its head and using coils to build around a mould, creating bowls and baskets with a much more sculptural feel.

You’ll learn two different projects. The first is a skeleton-style bowl, where the coils become the structure of the piece, creating an open design that you can see straight through.

The second is a traditional coiled pattern bowl, where the coils are shaped into spirals and layered around the inside of a mould to create beautiful texture across the outside of the finished piece.

We’ll build on the fundamentals of rolling and working with coils, while exploring how changing the direction, placement and shape of your coils can create completely different results.

This is an intermediate build, so you should already be comfortable rolling a good, consistent coil. If you’re still finding your feet with clay, we recommend spending some time in our hand-building classes practising standard coiling first.

Take your time, expect a few things to go wrong and remember that the failures are often where the learning happens. Then have fun pushing this simple technique into something much more extravagant!

What you'll learn
